Andrew Jackson
  Tell me about Andrew Jackson.

1) Andrew Jackson's father died before he was born.
2) His mother and 2 brothers died before he was 14.
3) As a teenager, he had a job as a lawyer's apprentice.
4) He moved to Nashville when he was 20.
5) He was known for his bad temper. He would sometimes challenge people to a duel if they said something mean about him or his wife, Rachel. Is a duel a good way to deal with someone you are angry at?

6) In 1815, as a general, he defeated the British at the Battle of New Orleans.
7) In 1828, he became President of the United States.
8) He was one of the presidents who forced all Native Americans to migrate to the west. This was called the Trail of Tears.
9) His Nashville home was called the Hermitage. It has been carefully preserved.

  Tell me about Nancy Ward.

1) Nancy Ward was born as Nan'yehi in 1738 as a Cherokee. There was a smallpox epidemic at the time of her birth, so she was lucky to have survived.
2) She became a leader because of her bravery in fighting the Creek Indians.
3) She was considered a peacemaker. She saved the life of Lyda Bean, the wife of William Bean, who is considered Tennessee's first permanent male settler.

4) As more European settlers came to Tennessee, she became known as Nancy Ward.
5) When she was older, she ran an inn in Polk County. She cared for many children and was renamed Granny Ward.
What made her new name special?

  Tell me about David Crockett

1) David Crockett was born in 1786 in Greene County, Tennessee.
2) He was very good at hunting and being a soldier. He fought several times against Native Americans.
3) He was a politician. He was elected to the legislature and later to Congress. But late in his career, he had a feud with President Andrew Jackson. Why would his bad feelings toward Andrew Jackson hurt his political career?
4) In 1835, he lost a Congressional election and moved to Texas.

5) He was killed at the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, in March 1835.
6) He became a legend in both Tennessee and Texas.

* temper: When you have a temper, you cannot control your anger.
* duel:  A duel is a prearranged fight with deadly weapons by two people.
* general: A general is a leader in an army.
* migrate: If you move from one place to another, you migrate.
* preserved: If you keep something as it was, you preserve it.
* epidemic: An epidemic is a widespread disease that makes lots of people sick and sometimes kills them.
* permanent: When something is permanent, it lasts for a long time.
* inn: An inn is a small hotel.
* legend: A legend is a story about a supernatural person or event.
