The Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) has thousands of photographs in its many collections. Some were originally taken by the Tennessee Department of Conservation, and a small portion of those can be found on the Internet as part of TSLA's Tennessee Virtual Archives (TeVA).

This photos essay includes ten of the 86 images in TeVA's Department of Conservation collection. All ten of these photographs were taken in rural Tennessee just before World War II. They give a fascinating glimpse into life in that era -- which, for many parts of the state, was right before the world really began to change.
