It’s a long way from a tiny log cabin in Pickett County, Tennessee, to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
But Cordell Hull, who was born in such a place, is rightfully known as the Father of the United Nations.
Hull was a long-time Congressman from Tennessee who was appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt to be Secretary of State in 1933. He remained in that office for 11 years and did everything he could to try to stop World War II from taking place. He failed in that effort.

During the war, Hull became convinced that an international organization, stronger than the failed League of Nations, could stop wars from taking place in the future. He was the force behind the creation of the United Nations, and because of this he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945.
