Don’t Keep Them in Doubt is the Tennessee History for Kids booklet that covers all the Tennessee-specific topics in the high school U.S. history class.

There are many topics that high school history teachers are required to teach in this class that are not covered by national textbooks. Examples of this are:

The 1925 Scopes Trial in Dayton

Tennessee Valley Authority

The passage of the suffrage amendment in 1920

World War II in Tennessee (including the Manhattan Project, factory conversion, POW camps and war maneuvers)

The Civil Rights Movement in Tennessee (including the Highlander Folk School, Fayette County Tent Cities, Desegregation of Clinton High School and the Nashville Sit-ins)

Don’t Keep Them in Doubt does a wonderful job of covering these subjects — which is why high school teachers throughout the state have been using this booklet since it debuted in 2018.

Since the standards for the U.S. history class didn’t change very much, this booklet covers both the 2019 and the 2027 standards. It was released in August 2025.
